CLEVELAND, Ohio– Fried chicken is always a hit.
American families are on the move a lot these days — whether shuttling the kids to swim lessons or day camp. In between errands and Zoom meetings, who doesn’t want a break from a hot kitchen?
Once reserved for special occasions or Sunday dinner, fried chicken is now a mainstay on American tables. Harland Sanders played a big role in that, spreading the gospel of chicken around the country via his Kentucky Fried Chicken franchises. Today, it’s the ultimate convenience food, with many grocery stores selling it in their prepared food sections.
In fact, according to data from the National Today Data Science team, 21-percent of the people they surveyed say they ate fried chicken once a week.
Most grocery-store chains and independent markets offer their version of this American classic. It’s the perfect centerpiece to a picnic in the park or a family meal in the backyard as temperatures soar.
Since its National Fried Chicken Day, its the ideal time to stop on the way home for a pack of crispy, juicy chicken.
But how can you be sure that store-prepared bird will measure up?
Last year we did the work for you. cleveland.com’s Best of Cleveland team tasted eight fried chicken offerings from Northeast Ohio grocery chains and big-box stores in June 2021 and ranked them best to worst.
