Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) claimed final victory at the Tour de Suisse after he overhauled leader Sergio Higuita (Bora-Hansgrohe) in the final time trial in Vaduz, which was won by Remco Evenepoel (QuickStep-AlphaVinyl).
Thomas, who began the final stage two seconds down on Higuita, was strongly favored to divest the Colombian of the yellow jersey and so it proved as he scorched around the 25.6km course to take second on the stage, just three seconds behind Evenepoel.
Higuita managed to limit his losses sufficiently to take second overall, 1:12 behind Thomas and four seconds ahead of Jakob Fulgsang (Israel-Premier Tech).
Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost) withstood a late bike change to secure fourth place on GC, while Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ) moved up to fifth overall thanks his third-place finish in the time trial.
Thomas became the third Ineos rider in succession to win the Tour de Suisse after Egan Bernal and Richard Carapaz, and his victory here highlighted his form ahead of the Tour de France.
Three-time World Champion Peter Sagan (TotalEnergies) was a non-starter on the final stage after he became the latest rider on the Tour de Suisse to test positive for COVID-19.
A cluster of coronavirus cases earlier in the week meant that just 79 riders remained in the race for the final time trial.
